Galatians 4:6 – “And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.”
Isn’t it interesting that the “Spirit of his Son” is the one who is crying Abba, Father? Roman 8:15 also says, “ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father!” This cry is the cry that Jesus demonstrates in Mark 14:36, “And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.” It is a prayer, but more than just talking to God. It’s a cry of intensity and passion from the Son to the Father. The word “cry” implies fervency.
We are promised the Spirit of the Son in us, who cries Abba, Father through us. It’s an interesting and extraordinary thought that God the Holy Spirit indwells us and cries out to God the Father, through us. Not only does He prompt us to cry, but He gives us the sense that we need to cry out to God, and He gives us the confidence to cry out to God. Romans 8:26 describes this more in depth by saying, “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”
As children, who have received the “Spirit of adoption,” we can come before God the Father with the cry of a child to their heavenly Father. Imagine a worldly father hearing their child cry out for their help. A worldly father would respond with help. God the Father is infinitely greater than any earthly father and delights in mercy. His compassions fail not. He will always do what is best.
Have you been at the place where you are so broken or in such need that your heart cries out, “Abba, Father! Help me!”? This new relationship with God the Father is an encouragement to a Christian. The desire to pray is from the Holy Spirit and confirms we are a child of God. “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:” (Romans 8:16).
Those that are filled with the Holy Ghost will pray more. The Holy Spirit will put that cry in their heart.
