Psalms 90:10, 12 says, “The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. (12) So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”
Are we numbering our days? Are we using our short lives, with seriousness, to fulfill the purpose we have before God? Isaiah 43:7 says, “Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.” As an application of that verse, we were created for God’s glory and the only way we can fulfil this purpose is through Him. We must be in fervent and persevering prayer with God daily. Without Him we can do nothing (John 15:5).
Adoniram Judson once said, “A life once spent is irrevocable. It will remain to be contemplated through eternity… If it has been a useless life, it can never be improved. Such will stand forever and ever. The same may be said of each day. When it is once past, it is gone forever. All the marks which we put upon it; it will exhibit forever… Each day will not only be a witness of our conduct, but will affect our everlasting destiny (Note: Not in loss of salvation but of rewards – 1Co 3:11, 12, 13, 14, 15, Jn 15:5). No day will lose its share of influence in determining where shall be our seat in heaven. How shall we then wish to see each day marked with usefulness! It will then be too late to mend its appearance. It is too late to mend the days that are past. The future is in our power. Let us, then, each morning, resolve to send the day into eternity in such a garb as we shall wish it to wear forever. And at night let us reflect that one more day is irrevocably gone, indelibly marked.”
“I am persuaded that we are all more deficient in a spirit of prayer than in any other grace. God loves importunate [urgent and persevering] prayer so much that he will not give us much blessing without it; and the reason he loves such prayer is, that he loves us, and knows that it is a necessary preparation for our receiving the richest blessings which he is waiting and longing to bestow.” ~ Adoniram Judson
We should remember to number our days and pray with urgency. Let it not be said that we wasted our prayer lives with halfhearted prayer or no prayer. It’s time to get serious.
